Ñåðâàë î÷åíü äëèííîíîã è ñòðîåí.  äëèíó åãî òåëî ðàâíî ïðèìåðíî 100ñì, õâîñò - 30-40 ñì. Ãîëîâà ìèíèàòþðíàÿ, ñ áîëüøèìè óøàìè, ÷òî åãî î÷åíü óêðàøàåò. Øåðñòü îðàíæåâî-êîðè÷íåâîãî îòòåíêà ñ òåìíûìè ïÿòíàìè, æèâîò ñâåòëûé. Ðàñïðîñòðàíåí â Àôðèêå ê þãó îò Ñàõàðû, íàñåëÿÿ êóñòàðíèêîâûå çàðîñëè âáëèçè îò âîäû.

Ðàíüøå ñåðâàëîâ íàçûâàëè ñåðâàëîâèäíûìè êîøêàìè, ïîòîìó ÷òî ñ÷èòàëè îñîáûì âèäîì. Òåïåðü æå äîêàçàíî. ×òî ñòåïíûå è ëåñíûå ñåðâàëû - ëèøü ðàçíûå ðàñû. Õîòÿ ñåðâàëû è äëèííîíîãè, îäíàêî êàê ãåïàðäû çà àíòèëîïàìè íå ñêà÷óò. Îõîòÿòñÿ îíè ñêðàäîì â âûñîêîé òðàâå è êóñòàõ, êàê ìåëêèå êîøêè.

The serval is a lightly built cat, with long legs, large ears, and short tail. Its coat is light brown with dark spots, black-tipped tail, and black ears with distinctive white spots. The serval may be found near water and in the reed beds and marshes of Algeria and Africa south of the Sahara, where it hunts by night, from the ground, and seeks rodents, reptiles, birds, and small deer.

Small mammals, especially rodents, are the serval’s main prey. Larger rodents are preferred, particularly vlei (swamp) rats (Smithers and Wilson 1979, Geertsema 1985, Bowland 1990), and also Nile rats (Geertsema 1976, 1985). Smaller mice are of secondary importance (Smithers and Wilson 1979, Geertsema 1985, Bowland 1990). Up to 12 mice were found in one serval stomach from Zimbabwe (Smithers 1978). Birds, reptiles, fish and insects are also taken, although infrequently when rodents are abundant (Geertsema 1985, Bowland 1990).
