The species of this neotropical family are small (<50mm SVL). The members of the genera Dendrobates and Phylobates advertise the presence of toxic skin alkaloids with bright aposomatic colors. All members of this family display parental care, in which the tadpoles, which hatch from eggs in a terrestrial nest, are carried in the back of the parents to a body of water like a stream, puddle or bromeliad leaf axil, where they complete their metamorphosis.
