Sand, Horned, and Spiny Lizards (Phrynosomatidae)

This family contains a large group of terrestrial and semi-arboreal American lizards. They are commonly known as Horned Lizards and Spiny Lizards. The majority of species in this group are covered with strongly keeled scales that make the scales rough, almost prickly in appearance and touch. Georgia is home to one member of this family.

This family was previously (and is still sometimes) treated as a subfamily of the Iguanidae: Sceloporinae or Phrynosomatinae. Frost and Etheridge (1989) raised the group to family status and this has been widely accepted. Other authors (like Macey et al. 1997), however, disagreed and suggested to reinstall the old subfamilial classification of iguanid lizards inlcuding the Phrynosomatinae.
