Los lagartos actuales se incluyen en varias familias y sus distintos agrupamientos se basan principalmente en numerosos caracteres anatómicos. Las dos divisiones o clados básales son Iguania y Scleroglossa. Dentro de Iguania, Chamaeleonidae y Agamidae se cree son grupos hermanos, basándose entre otros caracteres, en el tipo de implantación dental, el cual es compartido; tal tipo de implantación es acrodontica. La tradicional familia Iguanidae fue separada en varias familias basándose en estudios sobre caracteres no derivados, sin embargo, en recientes estudios moleculares un apoyo a la monofilia de Iguanidae y se recomienda de nuevo unificar esas nuevas familias como se encontraban anteriormente.

The genera listed below have been called Anolinae, Polychrotidae, or Polychrinae. Among them, Anolis is the most diverse reptile genus with close to 400 species in the Caribbean, Central, and South America and a few species even occuring in the United States. All anoles have subdigital lamellae which make them nimble climbers. Another characteristic feature of this genus is the often colorful dewlap that is used for intraspecific communication. The species of Polychrus are also arboreal and they even have a prehensile tail.

Anoles are some of the neatest lizards. They're all just the right size to be picked up, which makes them popular as pets, but lots of handling puts lots of stress on reptiles. And stress, simply, in the reptile world, kills.
