This family is very closely allied to the Cordylidae, and many zoologists consider this a subfamily of the latter.
Gerrhosaurids, too, are entirely restricted to Africa, including Madagascar. Unlike cordylids, gerrhosaurids are egg
layers and they lack the flattened, triangular heads of armadillo lizards. [ eng ] |

Gerrhosauridae

Habitat: Shifting-sand environments (especially in genera with reduced limbs), grassland, rain forests or more open formations (Malagasy species of
Tracheloptychus and Zonosaurus). Many species dig burrows in the ground. Zonosaurus maximus is semiaquatic and takes to water to escape disturbance,
hiding under bottom debris for long periods. [ eng ] |
