St George - English
URL: http://www.ewtn.com/library/MARY/GEORGE.htm

St George is honoured in the Catholic Church as one of the most illustrious martyrs of Christ. The Greeks have long distinguished him by the title of The Great Martyr, and keep his festival a holiday of obligation. There stood formerly in Constantinople five or six churches dedicated in his honour, the oldest of which was always said to have been built by Constantine the Great, who seems also to have been the founder of the church of St. George, which stood over his tomb in Palestine.

Catholic Information Network (CIN). St. George was martyred at Lydda in Palestina, probably before the time of Constantine. This is all that can be ascertained about this famous saint. There are many and various, but unfortunately not very dependable, Lives of St. George, telling of the wonders of his martyrdom: how he encouraged his fellow Christians by public avowal of his faith, how he was arrested and how he was executed after many sufferings, not indeed only on his part, for his persecutors received their punishment.

4th cent.?, perhaps a soldier in the imperial army who died for the faith in Asia Minor. His life is cloaked in legends; Gibbon’s identification of him with George of Cappadocia is false. George is one of the great saints of the Eastern Church and the ancient patron of soldiers.

George, a Captain in the Roman Army, tore up in defiance an edict of Emperor Diocletian ordering the persecution of Christians. He battled the devil, symbolized by the dragon, and saved the Holy Church, symbolized by the king's daughter shown in a number of icons. He rides a white horse that indicates God's grace carrying him to the heroism of martyrdom. Constantine the Great built a great church over his tomb in Lyda of Palestine. The name George means 'Tiller of the Earth.'

Biography: George, soldier and martyr (23 Apr 303) - English
URL: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/04/23b.html

George is a soldier and martyr who suffered around 303 at Lydda (Diospolis) in Palestine. The earliest surviving record of him is a church inscription in Syria, dated about 346. Commemorations of him are numerous, early, and widespread. However, no details of his life are known. In 495 his name appears on a list of "good men, justly remembered, whose good deeds are known only to God." The best-known story about him is that he rescued a beautiful princess in Libya by killing a dragon. It should be noted that this story is unknown before the appearance in 1265 of a romance called the Golden Legend (Legendum Aureum), translated into English in 1483.

Martyr, patron of England, suffered at or near Lydda, also known as Diospolis, in Palestine, probably before the time of Constantine. According to the very careful investigation of the whole question recently instituted by Father Delehaye, the Bollandist, in the light of modern sources of information, the above statement sums up all that can safely be affirmed about St. George, despite his early cultus and pre-eminent renown both in East and West.
