Ved sin død i december 1933, 54 år gammel, var polarforskeren og forfatteren Knud Rasmussen nationalhelt i Grønland og i Danmark. Gennem sin virksomhed og den respekt, der stod om ham i internationale kredse, havde han haft sin store andel i, at Danmark samme år havde fået tilkendt suveræniteten over Østgrønland ved den internationale domstol i Haag. En anden ting, han blev husket for, var hans store rejse et årti tidligere, under den 5. Thuleekspedition, hvor han med hundeslæde krydsede arktisk Nordamerika (med en lille afstikker til Sibirien), en bedrift der gjorde ham verdensberømt.

He sought confirmation of his theory that Eskimos are derived from the same stock as the native North Americans, having originally migrated from Asia. In 1910 he established his Thule station at Cape York, Greenland, the base for seven expeditions, five led by Rasmussen himself.
