Henry Bates was a naturalist and explorer most famous for his expedition to the Amazon with Alfred Russel Wallace in 1848. Wallace returned in 1852, but lost his collection in a shipwreck. When Bates arrived home seven years later (in 1859) he brought with him over 14,000 specimens (mostly insects) of which 8,000 were new to science.

British naturalist, primarily an entomologist, who also made large general collections of Amazonian animals during 14 years of field work. Bates, already a diehard beetle collector, became friends with Wallace while they were both living in the English countryside and then set out with him to become a professional collector in the Amazon in 1848.

When the young Alfred Russel Wallace dreamed of journeying to the Amazon, he was encouraged by his entomologist friend, Henry Walter Bates. Bates joined Wallace on the expedition in 1848, much to the regret of his parents who felt he'd make a much better living in manufacturing than in collecting exotic specimens.
