Elegant Newsletter - Termite Phylogenetics by S. Kambhampati
- English
URL: http://www.cals.cornell.edu/dept/bionb/isoptera/News991.html
A major impediment to our understanding of the finer points of termite evolution has been the lack of a robust hypothesis of phylogenetic relationships among the major subgroups (families, subfamilies) and
genera of Isoptera. Krishna (1970) summarized the evolutionary relationships among taxa based on a number of previously published hypotheses. However, the proposed relationships in Krishna (1970) are
based on neither explicit character sets nor cladistic analysis. In fact, almost all of the previously proposed phylogenetic hypotheses (reviewed in Kambhampati and Eggleton, 1999) suffer from two major
drawbacks: limited number of characters and the lack of a rigorous phylogenetic analysis. Thanks to the rapid development of phylogenetic systematics and molecular techniques, there is a growing interest in
termite phylogenetics. The first cladistic analysis of relationships among termite families was published by Kambhampati et al. (1996). Studies are now underway in various laboratories on higher level, subfamily,
and generic level relationships. [ eng ] |

Gut symbiosis in Isoptera
- English
URL: http://shum.huji.ac.il/~por/icz_xviii/abstracts/Rouland-LeFevre.html
Corinne Rouland-Lefevre: Termites, particularly abundant in humid tropical forests, absorb 6 to 7 tons of organic matter per year and per hectare, which corresponds to nearly 50 % of the vegetal matter falling down on
the soil. Such an important role in the decomposition of organic matter is due to the fact that these insects harbor numerous symbiotic microorganisms in their gut: protozoa, bacteria,
actinomycetes, mushrooms. They live in aeroby or anaeroby according to the species, and are specialized in degradation processes. [ eng ] |

"Isoptera, «eye SAHP tuhr uh,» is an order of insects that live in colonies similar to
those of ants and bees. Insects of this order are commonly called termites, or white ants.
About 2,000 species of termites are known. They live chiefly in warm regions." [ eng ] |
