Algae Divisions - CHAROPHYTA / Dept. Botany, NMNH, Smithsonian Institution - English
URL: http://www.nmnh.si.edu/botany/projects/algae/Algd-Cha.htm

Charophyta are freshwater plants and generally grow anchored to the substratum by rhizoids with a shoot extending upward. The shoot then divides and forms nodes from which a whorl of side filaments projects. Charophyta reproductive structures develop at these nodes and are, along with the biflagellate sperm produced in the male gametangium, quite similar to those of mosses.

Stoneworts - English
URL: http://www.wildlifetrust.org.uk/cornwall/wow/Reading/stonewort.htm

Stoneworts are a small group of terrestrial or freshwater simple, green algae, of the family Charophyta. They inhabit aquatic habitats, such as fresh and brackish pools and wetlands. Stoneworts have a requirement for calcium carbonate, consequently the greatest concentrations and diversity of these species are found on the coastal sand dunes and in pools situated on basic soils.

Stoneworts in Shropshire - English
URL: http://website.lineone.net/~margaret_cole/News5/stoneworts.htm

Stoneworts, or charophytes, are a group of complex algae that are usually included in the recording activities of botanical societies because they superficially resemble vascular plants more than they do other groups of algae. They are all rather difficult to identify and, as the taxonomy has changed somewhat in recent years, we do not accept any records without a voucher specimen.
