Õðèñòèàíñêàÿ ðåëèãèÿ íà Áàëêàíàõ íà÷àëà ðàñïðîñòðàíÿòüñÿ â àïîñòîëüñêèå âðåìåíà.  Äàëìàöèè (èñòîðè÷åñêîé îáëàñòè Þãîñëàâèè) òðóäèëñÿ àïîñòîë Òèò.  IV â. íà òåððèòîðèè Þãîñëàâèè áûëè ìèòðîïîëèÿ Ñèðìèéñêàÿ è ÷àñòè÷íî àðõèåïèñêîïèÿ Ñàëîíèêñêàÿ. Õðèñòèàíñòâî âîñòî÷íîãî îáðÿäà îñîáåííî àêòèâíî ðàñïðîñòðàíÿëîñü ñðåäè ñåðáîâ â IX â., êîãäà ïî ïðîñüáå ñåðáñêîãî êíÿçÿ Ìóòèìèðà âèçàíòèéñêèé èìïåðàòîð Âàñèëèé Ìàêåäîäÿíèí â 869 ã. ïðèñëàë ê ñåðáàì ãðå÷åñêèõ ñâÿùåííèêîâ.
