Astronotus ocellatus, or Oscar, loves to dig in the sand, so there should be no plants as they will be constantly uprooted. Electrical devices inside the aquarium, such as heater must be protected. Three of our four Oscars are standard reds, and the fourth is an albino red. Albinism in Oscars appears to be somewhat common since the price for albinos is comparable to the price for the standard reds. I have also observed albinism in the Tiger Oscar variety.

Plusieurs espèces ont été décrites dans le genre, mais on peut les considerer comme synonymes de A. ocellatus. C'est donc une espèce à la coloration variable et la répartition étendue, les différentes populations étant disséminées dans les bassins de l'Amazonie, de la Guyane Française et du nord du Paraguay. Dans leur pays d'origine ils vivent dans des eaux à faible courant et sont pêchés à des fins alimentaires. En aquarium, dans des conditions optimales, ils atteignent plus de trente cinq cm soit un peu plus que dans la nature.

Astronotus ocellatus, whose common name is the Oscar, is one of the largest of the popular New World Cichlids. Although the Oscar can attain sizes up to 14 inches or so, it is rare to see one over 12 inches. They are a great cichlid to raise in a tank all by itself or a great cichlid to raise as a group in a tank. They are very intelligent fish and have personality.
