Melanochromis auratus are an mbuna from Lake Malawi. Lake Malawi has many rocky areas, as well as some grassy and sandy areas to provide many hiding places for its inhabitants. They live in moderately hard water with the pH above 7.4.

Melanochromis joanjohnsonae - French

Cette espèce a été le sujet de nombreuses discussions taxonomiques. Décrite tout d'abord par Jonhson en 1974 sous labidochromis joanhsonae, Oliver l'appelle L. fryeri en 1975, pour Burgess c'est Melanochromis exasperatus en 1982. Enfin en 1982, c'est Lewis qui met fin (provisoirement?) à la confusion.

Melanochromis Auratus is one of the most aggresive little Mbuna fishies there is! The males are highly territorial. They should be kept in a ratio of 1:3 or 4 males to females. They get to be 4 inches long and the males grow to become a diff. color than the females. The females retain the juv. color of yellow bodies, with a large black line down it's body horizontally. The males will become different color at about 2-3 in. length.

The Auratus is a popular little cichlid from the rocky shores of Lake Malawi. The basic coloration of male and female juveniles is bright yellow, with two white-edged black bars on the upper half of the body from the snout to the end of the caudal fin.

This species is the exception that justifies the rule. Though it belongs in the same genus with M. auratus and M. chipokae (two of the most aggressive mbuna in this hobby) it is a relatively peaceful species (for an mbuna).

Pflege und Haltung: Flockenfutter, kleine Insektenlarven, Wasserflöhe. Der Boden kann mit Kies oder Sand, aber auch mit Steinen oser Steinplatten eingerichtet sein. Das Becken sollte nicht zu hell beleuchtet sein und viel Schwimmraum haben. Temp. 24-26°C, pH 6.2-7, das Wasser sollte nicht zu weich sein, Leitungswasser ist in der Regel geeignet.

This is the photo of a 5 month old Melanochromis auratus born in my tank. What you see is the female coloration which the fish will keep till the age of 6 months. When adult males are present in the tank, young males will keep the female coloration much longer as a "camouflage" which will protect them from their father. A really beautiful species which is among the few giving females with more intense colors than males.

Une exploration plus précise des côtes de l'île de Likoma effectuée il y a seulement quelques années a permis la découverte parmi de nouveaux mbunas d'une espèce bien colorée en provenance du lac Malawi: Melanochromis "maingano".Depuis cette espèce a été décrite et le nom est devenu Melanochromis cyaneorhabdos, BOWERS & STAUFFER, 1997. Ce petit cichlidé (L.T.9 cm.) est originaire de Likoma Island et fréquente une zone à des profondeurs de 3 à 20 mètres surtout dans l’habitat rocheux où il s’alimente essentiellement de plancton et d’algues (aufwuchs).
