Both species of Cacajao are listed as endangered by the USDI and as vulnerable by the IUCN and are on appendix 1 of the CITES. C. melanocephalus is still abundant in parts of Brazil but will be vulnerable to increased hunting as the human population builds up in the region.

Uakaris are found only in the tropical forests that are either constantly or seasonally flooded, and mostly along small rivers and lakes within the forest.
