Sulcata Tortoises - English

Sulcata tortoises are native to more northern parts of Africa, ranging from the southern edge of the Sahara down through the arid countries, including Senegal, Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Chad, the Sudan, and Ethiopia, up through the dry, hot Massaua coast bordering the Red Sea.

Geochelone Elegans (Indian Star Tortoise) is a close relative of the large Leopard Tortoise (Geochelone Pardalis). The Indian Star Tortoise can be found in Ceylon and peninsular India. It can also be found westward near Sind. It has also been spotted on the islands of Karaduva and Ramaswaran.

The Galapagos Islands form an archipelago off the northwest coast of South America and are home to a truly unique assemblage of organisms. In 1535, Spanish explorers named the islands "Galapagos" which means tortoise. At this time, there were 14 varieties of the species inhabiting the different islands of the archipelago.

Die Pantherschildkröte bewohnt das östliche Afrika von Äthiopien und vom Sudan südwärts bis zum Kap der Guten Hoffnung in Südafrika. Hier bevorzugt sie trockene, sandige Halbwüsten-, sowie Busch- und Savannenlandschaften. Lediglich in den Sommermonaten in den Sommermonaten kommt es zu relativ unergiebigen Niederschlägen. Wasser wird von den Tieren hauptsächlich über die Nahrung aufgenommen. Die maximale Panzerlänge (Stockmaß) ausgewachsener Tiere beträgt stolze 68 cm.

The Giant Tortoise is very regular in its sleeping, feeding, and nesting habits. In zoos, they are observed to go to their sleeping shelter in a particular sequence, and each tortoise has a specific area inside. A tortoise may shift occasionally within its area, but never changes to a different place. After their approximate sixteen-hour slumber, they leave the shelter in a fixed but different order than the one they entered the shed in.
