The Federalist Papers are a collection of articles that appeared in newspapers in New York from late 1787 to late 1788. Published originally under the pseudonym PUBLIUS, these eighty-five essays were written by Alexander Hamilton, John Jay, and James Madison to explain the benefits of the proposed Constitution to the people, and to defend it against its many critics.
