Simply Fungi - Edible and Poisonous Fungi - English
URL: http://www.geocities.com/keithdnorman_2002/edible.htm

Many edible fungi have look-alikes which may be poisonous. Even the Field Mushroom has its evil twins. Depending on the fungus, a person may suffer from a mild stomach upset to a fatal poisoning, and it only takes a small amount of the most dangerous mushrooms to cause death. This page gives an insight into some of the more likely fungi candidates.

Edible and Poisonous Fungi - English

Many people are interested in fungi because they are edible. But everyone also knows that wild fungi can be both delicious and deadly poisonous. Unfortunately, there is no simple way of saying what is edible and what is poisonous. The best way of sensibly eating wild fungi is to follow the guidelines below and to stick to a small number of easily recognisable, but tasty, species.

Wild Mushrooms and Poisoning - The Dos and Don'ts - English

Due to the wide variety of climates, soils and plant communities, North Carolina has within its boundaries one of the greatest diversity of species of mushrooms and related fungi of any state in the U.S. Mushrooms are found in lawns, pastures, forests, mulch of all types, on stumps, living trees and in such unusual locations as basements, plaster board walls and flower pots in houses and shopping centers. Most mushrooms occur from Spring to Fall after rains; although they may be found all year if temperature and moisture are not limiting.

Edible and Poisonous Fungi - English

For some reason, myths about poisonous mushrooms persist. Many Australians, particularly those of British extraction, have a phobia about 'toadstools' and fear being poisoned by eating 'unknown' fungi. In stark contrast, Continental Europeans have long taken an active interest in the culinary qualities of their native fungi, enjoying the flavour of truffles, chantarelles and morels, while the Chinese have enjoyed the oyster mushroom and straw mushroom, and the Japanese have long revered the flavour-enhancing qualities of shi-i-take and its relatives.

There are lots of edible fungi- mushrooms, informally- in the Nova Scotian woods. There are also plenty of "mushrooms" that look good enough to eat, but watch out! In fact, many of them are sickening or deadly.
