There are 21 Mayan languages in Guatemala officially recognized by the Academy of Mayan Languages of Guatemala, and by a governmental decree of November 23, 1987, which also established an official alphabet for each of the languages. An additional 6 Mayan languages (at least) are spoken in Mexico and 3 in Belize, some of which are also spoken in Guatemala. There may also be as many as 100,000 speakers of Mayan languages in the great Maya diaspora in the United States and Canada.
