These rodents normally spend their life within an area about 180 meters in diameter. In a study of A. sylvaticus in Ireland, Fairley and Jones (1976) found average range lengths of about 109 meters for males and 64 meters for females. For the same species in England, Crawley (1969) calculated average home ranges of 2,250 sq meters for males and 1,817 sq meters for females. [ eng ] |

The wood mouse frequents various habitats (edges of deciduous forests, hedges, fields, parks and gardens). In autumn, it has a tendency to seek refuge in buildings and homes. It is nocturnal. It runs quickly and climbs easily. In general it digs a shallow burrow, but can also live in existing cavities: hole of a wall, birds' box.
