Here are some photographs of the trio of Nile rat does that I hand-reared in September 1997. Nile rats are, unsurprisingly, from East Africa and are not yet domesticated. Nile rats are also known as Kusu Rats or African Unstriped Grass Mice... they are uncommon in captivity but thrive in the wild...

These mice are most common in grasslands and savannahs but also have been reported from forests and scrubby thickets. In Ethiopia they are found at elevations of up to 3,700 meters (Mьller 1977). In Uganda they tend to live under dense herb mats, where they construct long tunnels radiating out from their holes.
