Synaptomys: Bog Lemmings
- English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walkers_mammals_of_the_world/rodentia.muridae.syn
These animals seem to occupy small, local, isolated areas; their spotty occurrence makes a general map of their range misleading. In the southern parts of their range they are limited mainly to scattered cold bog and cold spring areas. Farther north they have a more general distribution, usually living in moist areas, though in the humid Pacific Northwest they have been found near rocky cliffs. [ eng ] |

S. borealis primarily live in burrows among sedges and grasses (Wilson et al, 1999). They can be found where moisture levels are high and growth of sedges and grasses are sufficient to provide cover as well as act as their food supply. [ eng ] |

Synaptomys cooperi occur mainly in sphagnum bogs, as their common name suggests, but they may also occur in grasslands, and in Canada they occur in coniferous or deciduos forests. In Michigan, they can be found in clear cuts, old fields, or upland woods. [ eng ] |
