African pouched rats inhabit savannahs, scrubby areas, grassy places in open forests, cultivated fields, and sandy plains. They are nocturnal, terrestrial, and rather slow-moving. They may utilize holes dug by other animals or dig their own simple burrows, which often have two entrances and a single enlarged sleeping and storage chamber (Kingdon 1974b). At least in the southern portion of their range, they accumulate seeds during the summer for use in the winter. [ eng ] |
