The South African Hamster or White-tailed Rat is the sole member of its genus as well as the only Hamster native to Africa. Where they are nocturnal. Inhabiting the dry grasslands living in burrows. Wild populations are declining and they are now considered to be treatened.

The single species, M. albicaudatus, occurs in South Africa and Swaziland (Meester et al. 1986).
