Reig (1987) stated that Bolomys inhabits both the highest altitudes of the Altiplano and the Chacoan, pampean, and Brazilian lowlands. Barlow (1969) found B. obscurus to be restricted to limnic habitats and collected it in inundated places with plentiful vegetation; stomach contents indicated that the species feeds primarily on arthropods.
