Grasshopper Mice
- English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walker/rodentia.muridae.onychomys.html
Grasshopper mice occur in shortgrass prairies and desert scrub. O. torridus prefers relatively xeric areas at lower elevations, while O. leucogaster tends to occupy more mesic areas at higher elevations (McCarty 1978). Both species are largely nocturnal and are active throughout the year. [ eng ] |

Mostly carnivorous. The parents actually teach their offspring how to successfully capture and eat Pinacate Beetles (stick their abdomen in the soil before being squirt and then do not eat the glands at the base of the abdomen) and scorpions (remove stinger). [ eng ] |

Onychomys leucogaster: Narrative
- English
URL: http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/accounts/onychomys/o._leucogaster$narrativ
Onychomys leucogaster live in shortgrass prairies, sand dunes and in sage brush desert. These are primarily areas with sandy soil in which they build their burrows. Compared to other species of the same genus, northern grasshopper mice prefer higher elevations and so are also commonly found in canyon lands.
Biomes: temperate grassland, desert.

Mearn's Grasshopper Mouse (Onychomys arenicola)
- English
URL: http://www.nsrl.ttu.edu/tmot1/onycaren.htm
This mouse chiefly inhabits the low, arid, sandy or gravelly desert areas where vegetation in the form of creosote bush, mesquite, yucca, lechuguilla, condalia, and so forth is sparse and scattered. It lives in burrows of its own or in those it usurps from other small rodents. Like the northern grasshopper mouse, it is relatively rare in most localities.
