Sigmodon: Cotton Rats
- English
URL: http://www.press.jhu.edu/books/walkers_mammals_of_the_world/rodentia.muridae.sig
Cotton rats prefer grassy and shrubby areas. Their presence is indicated by surface trails, shallow burrows beneath small plants, and small nests of grasses and sedges located in cuplike depressions in the ground. At the northern extremity of the range of S. hispidus, in Nebraska, nests were found 76.2 cm below the surface in the burrows of other animals (Baar, Fleharty, and Artman 1975). Cotton rats are active day and night throughout the year. [ eng ] |
