Nannospalax: Mediterranean Blind Mole-rats - English

These blind mole-rats occur in deep sandy or loamy soils in a variety of habitats, including dry brush country, fields, and woodlands, but they avoid true sand desert. They have been found in mountain clearings at an elevation of 2,600 meters in Turkey. They are both diurnal and nocturnal, but studies in Yugoslavia by Savic (1973) indicate that S. leucodon is more active by day than by night.
