Diurno; terrestre; a menudo en pares, a veces solitario. El Agutн de Anca Roja se alimenta de frutos, nueces o semillas. In some areas Dasyprocta constructs burrows among limestone boulders, along riverbanks, or under the roots of trees. In a study of D. punctata on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, however, Smythe (1978) found that each animal had several sleeping spots, usually located in hollow logs, among tree roots, or under tangled vegetation.

They are found in forests, thick brush, savannahs and cultivated areas. In Peru, they are confined to the Amazonian region where they are found in all parts of the low selva zone and many parts of the high selva zone. It is found at altitudes of 2000 m or more. Agoutis live in close proximity to water, being found on the banks of all types of streams.
