St. Jerome, who was born Eusebius Hieronymous Sophronius, was the most learned of the Fathers of the Western Church. He was born about the year 342 at Stridonius, a small town at the head of the Adriatic, near the episcopal city of Aquileia. His father, a Christian, took care that his son was well instructed at home, then sent him to Rome, where the young man's teachers were the famous pagan grammarian Donatus and Victorinus, a Christian rhetorician.

Jerome is best known as the translator of the Bible into Latin. A previous version (now called the Old Latin) existed, but Jerome's version far surpassed it in scholarship and in literary quality. Jerome was well versed in classical Latin (as well as Greek and Hebrew), but deliberately translated the Bible into the style of Latin that was actually spoken and written by the majority of persons in his own time. This kind of Latin is known as Vulgate Latin (meaning the Latin of the common people), and accordingly Jerome's translation is called the Vulgate.

Saint Jerome (Eusebius Hieronymus), magisterial biblical scholar, literary artist, and advocate of asceticism, is traditionally classed as one of the "doctors" of the Latin church. The date of his birth is disputed. He died in 420 CE, which according to Prosper of Aquitaine's Chronicle was his ninety-first year; other evidence however suggests that he was born not in 331 but in the 340s, probably in 347 CE.

Jerome From 391-406 CE, Eusebius Hieronymus, known to us as St. Jerome, completed and published a translation of the Bible that became the standard edition of the Bible for the Western church. Jerome's translation of the Old Testament came from the Hebrew, not from the Septuagint, and his translation of the New Testament was based on Greek texts of older origin than those used for the Old Latin translation.
