ST. LEO I, THE GREAT - English
URL: http://www.cfpeople.org/Books/Pope/POPEp45.htm

"A burden to shudder at"--thus St. Leo I spoke of the papal office. Yet few have been so capable of bearing that burden as the clever, energetic, and holy Tuscan who succeeded St. Sixtus III. A deacon in the Church at Rome Leo was absent in Gaul on an important mission for the Emperor when St. Sixtus III died. He returned to find himself pope.

The details of Leo's early life are extremely scanty and uncertain. It is probable that he was born between 390 and 400a.d.There is a tradition that his father was a Tuscan named Quintian, and that Volaterrae, a town in the north of Etruria, was his birthplace. Of his youth we know nothing: his writings contain no allusions to that or to any other part of his personal history.

CIN - LEO I (THE GREAT) 461 - English
URL: http://www.cin.org/leogreat.html

The date of St Leo's birth is not known, nor the place certainly, although it seems probable that it was Rome. We have record of him as deacon in positions of responsibility under Celestine I and Sixtus III, and he himself became pope in 440. His work was so great and so manifold that it does much less than justice to summarize it, but it took four chief forms: control of heresy in the west, intervention in doctrinal controversy of profound importance in the east, the defense of Rome itself against barbarian invasion, and his work as pastor and teacher.

Patron Saints Index: Pope Saint Leo the Great - English
URL: http://www.catholic-forum.com/saints/saintl04.htm

Memorial 10 November Profile Italian nobility. Strong student, especially in scripture and theology. Priest. Eloquent writer and homilist. Pope from 440 to 461 during the time of the invasion of Attila the Hun. When Attila marched on Rome, Leo went out to meet him and pleaded for leave. As Leo spoke, Attila saw the vision of a man in priestly robes, carrying a bare sword, and threatening to kill the invader if he did not obey Pope Leo. As Leo had a great devotion to Saint Peter, it is generally believed the first pope was the visionary opponent to the Huns. When Genseric invaded Rome, Leo's sanctity and eloquence saved the city again.

Biography: Leo the Great, Bishop of Rome, doctor (10 Nov 461) - English
URL: http://elvis.rowan.edu/~kilroy/JEK/11/10.html

Leo I (440-461) and Gregory I (590-604) are the only two bishops of Rome commonly called "the Great." Leo, at a time when the capital of the Empire had been moved to Constantinople, and the government even in Italy no longer had its headquarters at Rome, was the most important official in the city. To him fell such prosaic tasks as supervising the distribution of grain imports and reorganizing the municipal fire department.
