The two original most authentic lives of St. Pius V are that wrote by Jerome Catena secretary to the Cardinal of Alexandria, and consulter to several congregations in Rome in Italian highly approved by Sextus V the other in Latin by Ant. Gabutio superior of the regular clerks of St. Paul much commended by Clement VIII.

Catholic Information Network (CIN). He was born on St. Antony's day 1504 at Bosco near Alessandria in north Italy, the son of Paolo and Domenica Ghisleri, and baptized Anthony. His family was poor, and he was put out to tending sheep; as a richer neighbor offered to pay his fees, however, he was sent to the Dominican school at Bosco and entered the convent at the age of fourteen, taking the name of Michael.

Pope St. Pius V was born of a noble family at Bosco, Italy in the year 1504. Pius received the name Michael at his baptism and as a child received an excellent education in piety and holiness. As a youth, Michael received a scholastic education from a Dominican friar and by the time he was 15, he joined the order. Michael made great strides in his relationship with God and in his education.

Born at Bosco, near Alexandria, Lombardy, 17 Jan., 1504 elected 7 Jan., 1566; died 1 May, 1572. Being of a poor though noble family his lot would have been to follow a trade, but he was taken in by the Dominicans of Voghera, where he received a good education and was trained in the way of solid and austere piety.
