Greek sculptor, one of the greatest sculptors of ancient Greece. No original in existence can be attributed to him with certainty, although numerous Roman copies in varying degrees of supposed fidelity exist. However, the estimates of ancient writers, their descriptions of his statues, and his influence on all later sculpture have secured his fame.

Athenian sculptor, the artistic director of the construction of the Parthenon, who created its most important religious images and supervised and probably designed its overall sculptural decoration. It is said of Phidias that he alone had seen the exact image of the gods and that he revealed it to man. He established forever general conceptions of Zeus and Athena.

Often considered the greatest of the ancient Greek sculptors, Phidias was renowned for the majesty of his figures. An Athenian sculptor, he worked primarily in bronze or in gold and ivory, creating statues of divinities, heroes, and athletes for the major city-states and sanctuaries. His first known commission was to execute for Athens a large bronze group of national heroes with the general Miltiades as the central figure.
