(1784-1817) — швейцарский путешественник. Положил начало исследованию Нубии. Путешествовал по заданию британской «Африканской ассоциации». В 1813-1814 годах совершил две поездки на юг от Асуана, ознакомился с долиной Нила и караванными дорогами через Нубийскую пустыню между Асуаном и Шенди (выше устья Атбары, правого притока Нила). Во втором путешествии проехал от Шенди до Суакнна на Красном море, обследовав по пути «нижнее течение Атбары. Умер в Каире от дизентерии.
