The Prussian ambassador in London suggested to Richardson the name of a young German, Heinrich Barth, who already had experience of exploration in the Middle East and in northern Africa. Barth had studied archeology, history, geography and law at the University of Berlin.

Die nachfolgenden Ereignisse schildern eine Episode aus dem Jahre 1853, als der groЯe deutsche Afrikaforscher Heinrich Barth bei Ssai den Niger erreichte. Er durchquerte von dort aus den Nigerbogen, zog durch die wilden Homboriberge und betrat am 7. November als dritter Europдer (nach Major Laing und Renй Cailliй) das legendдre Timbuktu. Sein Rьckweg fьhrte ihn ьber Gao, immer am Ufer des Flusses entlang, bis er schlieЯlich nach fast elf Monaten Reise wieder Ssai erreichte.
