John Davis (also spelled Davys) was a true explorer, combining great skill in navigation with patience and careful work. Three times, he tried to find the Northwest Passage. Though he failed, he went farther north than any explorer had gone before and mapped huge areas. This made it possible for later explorers to go further. He also invented the Davis Quadrant, a tool used for measuring the position of the ship on the Earth.

( 1550 — 1605 ) — английский мореплаватель. В 1585-1587 совершил проход из Атлантического в Тихий океан. Открыл пролив от Гренландии, названный его именем. В 1592-94 открыл Фолклендские (Мальвинские) острова Джон Дейвис продолжил поиски прохода в море, отделяющем Гренландию от Северо-Американского архипелага.

1550?–1605, English navigator. He made his first voyage in search of the Northwest Passage in 1585, continuing the work of Martin Frobisher. On this voyage he discovered Cumberland Sound of Baffin Island and made explorations that prepared the way for his later voyages in 1586 and 1587. On the third exploration he sailed through Davis Strait into Baffin Bay and coasted down Baffin Island and across the east end of Hudson Strait.
