In 1530 the Franciscans started the first mission for the Huastec and Pames Indians in what is now the the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. Father Andrйs de Olmos is credited with establishing the Villa de San Luis de Tampico in 1560. In 1583 Luis de Carvajal y de la Cueva, a Portuguese Jew, was named as Governor of Nuevo Leтn. He entered with his colony and began to establish the colonies of Monterrey, Monclova, and probably Cerralvo between that year and 1596.
