Haekel, Ernst (1834-1919)
German naturalist who was the first German biologist to support Charles Darwin's theory of natural selection. He observed that early embryos of different species resembled each other. He invented the recapitulation doctrine, which maintains that the development of the individual organism obeys the same laws as the development of the whole animal species. [eng]
