Encyclopedia.com - Results for Merleau-Ponty, Maurice
Merleau-Ponty, Maurice (1908-61), French philosopher. Influenced by Edmund Husserl, he advocated a form of Phenomenology but, unlike most phenomenologists, affirmed the material reality of a world that transcends one's consciousness of it. In the 1940s and 50s he was sympathetic to the historical materialism of Karl Marx, but later he turned his attention to the study of language and meaning. His major works are The Structure of Behavior (1942) and Phenomenology of Perception (1945). [eng]
