Encyclopedia.com - Results for Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von
Schelling, Friedrich Wilhelm Joseph von
1775-1854, German philosopher. First influenced by the
IDEALISM of J.G. FICHTE, he held the concept of the Absolute
to represent the ultimate unity of mind and matter. Later
Schelling saw history as a series of stages progressing
toward that unity, and (unlike Fichte) held that nature itself
progressed toward the Absolute. [eng]
