Frisian language
Frisian language, member of the West Germanic group of the Germanic subfamily of the Indo-European family of languages (see Germanic languages). It has a number of dialects and is spoken by more than 300,000 people, most of whom speak West Frisian and live in Friesland, a province of the Netherlands. Frisian is a West Germanic language (see characterisation of the Germanic language family) which is spoken by about 400,000 people in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. It is closely related to Dutch but also shows a number of striking similarities to English, especially at the lexical level. [eng] |

Frisian language
Frisian is especially rich in vowels and diphthongs: at all there are about 25 diphthongs and 6 triphthongs in the language. Diphthongs, as well as single vowels, vary in the root ablaut mutation (doar [do:ar] 'door' - doarren [dwaren] 'doors'). Together with Afrikaans Frisian is unique among Germanic languages for its nasal vowels. The sound [r] looks more like English, unlike Dutch and German - it is alveolar, not uvular. Frisian language
Frisians were a wary and terrible nation, according to ancient sources, and a headache of all conquerors. Vikings were afraid of them and always seeked their friendship; Charlemagne attempted to include their lands in his empire in vain; Frisians made successful invasions on the British Isles and many European coasts. In the 5th century they were one of the four main tribes who invaded England. But later Frisian power began its decline, due to their little number and no state. Nowadays they make up some 350 thousand people living in the Netherlands, where their lands are called Friesland, and in Germany, mainly on little islands along the western coast. [eng] |
