John Forrest (1847-1918) was a surveyor who made several expeditions into the centre of Australia. Together with his brother, they became the best known explorers in Western Australia. Both John and his brother were born in Bunbury, Western Australia. Later, in 1890, John Forrest became the first Premier of Western Australia. He was later elected to the federal government in 1901 and was made Baron John Forrest of Bunbury in 1918. Discoverers Web: Crossing West Australia - Giles, Warburton, Gosse
In 1872, only 10 years after Stuart had crossed Australia from south to north and back, the Overland Telegraph Line was built, almost exactly following his route. The desert area to the west of it was a difficult and not very well-known terrain. The next challenge for Australian explorers thus became to cross these deserts from the telegraph road to the coast. Discoverers Web: Hamilton Hume
Hamilton Hume was born at Parramatta in New South Wales on 18 June 1797, only eleven years after the first European settlement in the country now known as Australia. His father had various jobs connected with convict supervision, and eventually was given land near Appin, south of Sydney. Young Hamilton and his brothers and sister grew up there, and were educated by their mother. Hamilton had a good knowledge of bushcraft, and by the age of 17 was exploring, first to the Berrima district (between Sydney and Canberra), then with Surveyor Meehan discovering the Goulburn Plains and Lake Bathurst. Grey Company: The Batavia Story
In 1629 the ship Batavia, then on her maiden voyage, sank after running aground on the Houtman Abrolhos Islands some 40 miles off the coast of Western Australia. The events that followed involved the extremes of human behaviour both evil and heroic. The story has recently been brought to life in a TV documentary drama produced by Prospero Productions. [eng]
