Mustela frenata (Long-Tailed Weasel): Narrative
The main prey for the long-tailed weasel is small rodents. Females, with smaller bodies, have better luck getting the small rodents because their bodies can fit inside the small rodent burrows. Males pursue larger animals, for example the eastern cottontail. While mammals are the food of choice, the weasels eat a wide range of food, from birds to reptiles, and in the summer their diet includes fruits and berries. [eng]
Mustela erminea (Ermine): Narrative
Ermine are carnivores that hunt primarily at night. They are specialist predators on small, warmblooded vertebrates, preferably mammals of rabbit size and smaller. When mammalian prey is scarce, ermine eat birds, eggs, frogs, fish, and insects. In severe climates, ermine frequently hunt under snow and survive entirely on small rodents and lemmings. [eng]
Mink (Mustela vison)
Mink are closely associated with the waterways and lakes of North America, but the smaller streams are preferred to the large, broad rivers. Along the coast they frequent the brackish marshes and, on occasion, the littoral area adjacent to the ocean. They are most common along streams partly choked by windfalls and other debris which create numerous water holes and at the same time offer concealment for the mink. Lake and marsh-dwelling mink are usually larger than those that live along streams. [eng]
