Pteronura brasiliensis (Giant Otter): Narrative
Pteronura brasiliensis lives in lentic freshwater rivers, lakes and creeks. On occasion, they are seen in agricultural canals and reservoirs of small dams, although they prefer gently sloped river banks and secluded areas with overhanging vegetation. [eng]
Giant Otter - Pteronura brasiliensis
The giant otter is found in the lakes, slow-moving forested rivers, creeks, reservoirs, and swamps of South America. They are absent from Argentina, Chile, and Uruguay. They are highly social animals found in extended family groups of 10-20 individuals. They share roles within the group, which is structured around the dominant, breeding pair. [eng]

Pteronura Brasiliensis - Characteristics
The Giant Otter has a round head with ears set low on the head and so small they are barely noticeable. Underwater they are able to close their ears and nostrils. The eyes are large and acute, the legs are muscular and the feet are completely webbed. The tail of the Giant Otter is long and flattened. Their fur is a dark burnt umber above, with a unique white mark on the throat which can be used to identify individual members of the species. [eng]
[deu]
