Mellivora capensis (Ratel, Honey Badger): Narrative
As a predator, the ratel uses its quickness to run down much of its prey. It attacks even poisonous snakes, relying on its shaggy coat to protect it from harm. Squat and muscular, the ratel is ready for battle, having been known to attack animals much larger than itself such as the African buffalo, the gnu, or waterbuck. [eng]

Mellivora
This form is close to the living African Honey-badger, a species which is rather variable, both in size and morphology, and is perhaps as old as the lower Pliocene. [eng]

Mellivora capensis
Although widespread and locally common, the species has not been studied intensely, and literature available on its ecology is limited. Most of the information available refers to the species in the eastern and southern part of its range of distribution. Very little is known on its ecology in central, west, and north Africa.
