Los lagartos actuales se incluyen en varias familias y sus distintos agrupamientos se basan principalmente en numerosos caracteres anatómicos. Las dos divisiones
o clados básales son Iguania y Scleroglossa. Dentro de Iguania, Chamaeleonidae y Agamidae se cree son grupos hermanos, basándose entre otros caracteres, en el
tipo de implantación dental, el cual es compartido; tal tipo de implantación es acrodontica. La tradicional familia Iguanidae fue separada en varias familias basándose
en estudios sobre caracteres no derivados, sin embargo, en recientes estudios moleculares un apoyo a la monofilia de Iguanidae y se recomienda de nuevo unificar

Heloderma spp.
H. suspectum is distributed in the United States of America in extreme southwestern Utah, southern Nevada and California, south through Arizona and southwest New Mexico to northern Mexico (Behler and King 1989). H. horridum exists in Mexico and Guatemala (Bogert and Martín del Campo 1993). Each subspecies has a rather restricted distribution, some more so than others. [eng]
