An old report of N. javanica from Timor was not accepted by Bergmans and Van Bree (1986) or Goodwin (1979). N. madagascariensis of Madagascar is sometimes considered a full species and sometimes a synonym of N. thebaica, but Van Cakenberghe and De Vree (1985) indicated that it is a synonym of N. macrotis.
