[ita]
Family Atherinidae
Silversides are distributed from tropical to temperate waters. Two widely separated dorsal fins, the first with flexible spines and the second with one spine followed by soft rays; anal fin with one spine followed by soft rays; pectoral fins high on body; mouth small and terminal; no lateral line. Silversides
Three species of atherinids are known to the Sacramento-San Joaquin estuary; topsmelt, Atherinops affinis, an estuarine species; jacksmelt, Atherinopsis californiensis, a coastal marine species; and inland silverside, Menidia beryllina, an introduced freshwater species. California grunion, Leuresthes tenuis, a coastal marine fish, was reported in San Francisco Bay by Miller and Lea (1972). [eng]

Nonindigenous Fishes - Atherinidae
The family Atherinidae contains about 25 genera and about 165 species. The group has a worldwide distribution. Only three species occur naturally in freshwaters of the United States. Atherinids are small fishes, ranging in length from 5 to 70 cm, but most are less than 15 cm in length. They are characterized by a silvery, elongate, compressed body with two widely separated dorsal fins, large eyes, and a long snout with a terminal mouth. [eng]
