The family Atherinidae contains about 25 genera and about 165 species. The group has a worldwide distribution. Only three species occur naturally in freshwaters of the United States. Atherinids are small fishes, ranging in length from 5 to 70 cm, but most are less than 15 cm in length. They are characterized by a silvery, elongate, compressed body with two widely separated dorsal fins, large eyes, and a long snout with a terminal mouth. [eng] |
