Macroderma: Australian Giant False Vampire Bat, or Ghost Bat
The single species, M. gigas, may be found throughout that part of Australia north of 29° S (Ride 1970). Quaternary fossil remains indicate that the same species formerly occupied much of southern Australia (Molnar, Hall, and Mahoney 1984). Based on habitat suitability and reported observations, Filewood (1983) stated that there is little doubt that M. gigas also occurs in New Guinea. [eng] |
