Thrichomys: Punaré
The single species, T. apereoides, occurs in eastern Brazil and Paraguay (Cabrera 1961). The generic name CercomysCuvier, 1829, and the specific name Cercomys cunicularisgenerally have been applied to this animal. Petter (1973), however, found that the type specimen of Cercomys and C. cunicularis is actually a composite consisting of the skin of a cricetid rodent, the skull of a Proechimys, and the mandible of an Echimys.
