Nature's Dead Leaves and Pez Dispensers: Genus Uroplatus (Flat-tailed geckos)
There are few reptile genera that can boast more bizarre-looking species than the genus Uroplatus (Flat-tailed geckos). The largest member,
Uroplatus fimbiratus, opens its mouth so wide during its threat display, it looks like it has a flip-top head, invoking images of childhood pez
dispensers. One of the smaller members, Uroplatus phantasticus, has a morphology that so closely resembles a dead leaf, its tail even has
irregular patches missing from the margin to simulate decay. [eng]

Uroplatus geckos of Madagascar
These exciting, nocturnal geckos of Madagascar's primary forests are one of the most bizarre animals on earth. They are very cryptic-looking often totally camouflaged in their natural habitats. The local, native Malagasy people refer to these
animals as "taha-fisaka" or devils. While they may look evil, these geckos are totally harmless. [eng]

Common Leaf-tailed Gecko (Uroplatus fimbriatus)
The small island preserve of Nosy Mangabe is most
well-known as a place to see Aye-ayes, those bizarre and
elusive lemurs. Sadly, we searched and searched for Aye-ayes
but saw none. [eng]

U phantasticus
Uroplatus phantasicus is a small species of the Uroplatus (Leaf Tail or Flat Tail Geckos) Genus from parts
of Madagascar. Uroplatus phantasticus is a small Uroplatus reaching about a maximum from 5-6 inches in
total length at adulthood with an (eyelash) over each eye. These (eyelashes) make them look very
interesting. Their tails are very advanced in camouflage at resembling dead leaves. They are the exact shape
of most dead leaves and some will have small partitions taken from the sides to make the (leaf) look as if
eaten by an insect. [eng]

Uroplatus henkeli
Like all Leaf-Tail species, Henkel’s inhabits rainforest. It is strictly nocturnal, spending the day resting
head-downwards on a tree trunk or branch, relying on its superb camouflage for safety. They neither
venture high up into the trees nor, generally, down to the ground.
